Concern #177 - Privatisation Didn’t Improve Power Supply

Description:
Despite PHCN’s unbundling into multiple companies, Nigeria’s electricity generation and distribution remain inefficient and unreliable years later.

Desired Outcome:
Reliable, expanded, and equitable electricity supply across Nigeria.

What Could Go Wrong:
Privatisation failed to deliver intended service improvements.

Current Situation:
After over a decade, power generation remains low (below 4,000 MW), grid collapse persists, and multinationals exit, reflecting failure of unbundling.

Action Strategy:
Launch public audit via OpenConcerns of service improvements vs expectations.

Comments for this Concern

In Aba of Abia State, for instance, it cost about N500,000.00 to connect NEPA/PHCN light to a new house because they insist it is connection fee alongside prepaid meter cost, and it takes over 5 months to get it. The cost per household for meter bill on the unsteady supply of electricity is also ridiculously high and expensive for the poor people who cannot afford to live above the average $1 a day's metric by World Bank. It is indeed worth talking about... As similar things are experienced in Port Harcourt, Lagos, Abuja, as well. Despite that the rich ones, busuars, politicians and elites have privatised the power sector, e still bad ooo. Just my 5 cents thoughts
